Da Camera: Celtic Renaissance/Baroque Ensemble
Da Camera is a versatile ensemble, crossing the line between
'early', 'folk' and 'contemporary' music. Their programmes
range in repertoire from the passamezzi of the 15th century,
via traditional Celtic and English music, through the baroque,
to newly-commissioned works. Three new works have been
commissioned by them to date. All members of the recorder
family feature alongside many different sizes of viol with
harpsichord or organ accompaniment.
The ensemble has performed at London's Wigmore Hall, Purcell
Room, for the BBC on many occasions, at many major festivals
around the UK - including Totnes Early Music Society,
Finchcocks' Festival, Chester Summer Music Festival and
Dartington Summer Festival - and many other venues. Emma,
Susanna and Steven are all in demand as freelance musicians
with many of the UK's leading period groups and they all teach
on various music courses and summer schools, including
Dartington International Summer School.
They have just recorded their first CD on their own Da Camera
label of Scottish and Irish Baroque and Traditional music,
entitled A Celtic Celebration.

Current programmes include:
A Celtic Celebration
This programme consists of Irish and Scottish Baroque music
alongside traditional music. Composers include Carolan,
Oswald, Playford, Tollett, Eccles & others. This programme is
both lively and highly evocative, full of 'Celtic' sounds as
well as great 'baroque' music. Da Camera has performed this
programme at the Wigmore Hall, at the Totnes, Chester and
Finchcocks Festivals, and Dartington Summer School.
Bach Da Camera
This is a programme of Bach's organ trio sonatas arranged by
and for Da Camera. Work on the arrangements is still in
progress but it is very exciting and sounds wonderful on our
combination of recorders, viols and harpsichord, where each
individual line can be heard clearly. We will be performing
these at the Totnes Early Music Society and London's Purcell
Room next year.
Ground Bass, No Bass
This programme consists of late renaissance, baroque and
contemporary works based on grounds, alongside works that have
no separate bass (continuo) line at all. Pieces include
Corelli's La Follia, Vitali's Ciaccona, Eccles' Bellamira,
Nicholas Ansdell Evans' Ground, Gabriel Jackson's Toccata and
Ground, Fischer's Passacaille and others. Da Camera
commissioned three new works by young British composers for
this programme and has performed it at the Purcell Room, BBC
Maida Vale Studios, Dartington, and Northern Recorder Course.
